OPENING FILM OF GOOD REPORT CENSORED AT DIFF 2013

If you received this tag at the 34th Durban International Film Festival last night it means that you have an opportunity to see this years opening film. Well and even if you don't have this tag you could sneak in and sit on the stairs if all the seats are taken, after all it is a South African film  by a South African filmmaker.

That afternoon (18 July 2013) I had a brief chat with Jahmil, director of  the much anticipated film Off Good Report. I congratulated him on this offering and his response was that he would appreciate critical feedback from the film's audience. He did not just want a pat on the back, but he wanted his audience to be honest about their experience with the film.

This task I was ready for. I was ready to give him my feedback so I raced off to Suncoast Casino to book my ticket hoping that the film would not be SOLD OUT and to my surprise it WASN'T.

The task was still at hand.

Afternoon went and evening came and a snaking queue of filmmakers, media and film groupies was the first think you met when you arrive at the cinema.

We entered the cinema 1, only to be greeted by a screen and as per usual sat through Moosa's opening speech on behalf of the venue.

Logie's speech on behalf of the city...

Zama Mkhize, on behalf of the National Film and Video Foundation...

Peter Machen on behalf of the festival...

And wishing our former president Nelson Mandela a happy birthday. - Check it out, that is Jahmil in the foreground.

But my task was still at hand, I had to watch and rate this much anticipated movie, but to mine and the rest of the audience and not to mention the cast and crew, we were subjected to this...

 this...

 and this ...

...and with that... the task, has only just begun!

Yours in Film
